The film was shot (in Cinecittà) with both Italian and Spanish actors, all appearing in both versions. All Spanish actors are bubbed in the Italian version and vice-versa. The Italian version was released in Italy in October 1940. The Spanish version of the film, known as "El inspector Vargas" was only released in Spain in July 1947.

Anne Baxter was one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the silver screen. Herbert Lom, who played inspector Vargas, could have played a tennis match with himself in this one.
