The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros, great Indian rhinoceros, or Indian rhino for short, is a rhinoceros species native to the Indian subcontinent. It is the second largest extant species of rhinoceros, with adult males weighing 2.07–2.2 tonnes and adult females 1.6 tonnes.
Rhinoceroses, often simply called “rhinos,” are amongst the largest of all land animals on the Earth. Because of this, they are often classified as “megafauna,” which refers to animals over 2,200 lb (1,000 kg).
By 1970, rhino numbers dropped to 70,000, and today, around 27,000 rhinos remain in the wild. Very few rhinos survive outside national parks and reserves due to persistent poaching and habitat loss over many decades. Three species of rhino—black, Javan, and Sumatran—are critically endangered.
There are five species of rhino in the world—two in Africa, and three in Asia. Why are rhinos important to the environment? Rhinos are ecosystem engineers in the places where they live.
The greater one-horned rhino is identified by a single black horn about 8-25 inches long and a grey-brown hide with skin folds, which gives it an armor-plated appearance. The species is solitary, except when adult males or rhinos nearing adulthood gather at wallows or to graze.
