Bhishma (Sanskrit: भीष्म, romanized: bhīṣma, lit. 'mighty'), also known as Pitamaha, Gangaputra, and Devavrata, was a prince and commander of ancient Indian Kuru kingdom and is a major character of the epic Mahabharata and the protagonist of the Bhishma Parva episode.
Originally named Devavratha, he became known as Bhishma after he took the bhishma pratignya ('terrible oath') — the vow of lifelong celibacy and of service to whomever sat on the throne of his father (the throne of Hastinapur).
Bhishma is one of the central characters of the Mahabharata. Bhishma was born as Devevrata and is the grand sire of the heros and villans of the epic mahabharata. Once the eight Vasus visited Vashishta's ashram with their wives, one of the wives took a fancy to Nandini and asked her husband Prabhasa, to steal it from Vashishta.
Bhishma is a son of the river spirit Ganga, an elder in the Kuru lineage, and one of the most formidable commanders of the Kaurava army. Although he allies himself with Duryodhana, he maintains respect for the Pandavas, and he grants Yudhishthira permission to fight him before the war starts.
