The Theresian Military Academy (known as the Theresianum) is one of the oldest military academies in the world (the oldest is the Military Academy of Modena). It was founded on 14 December 1751 by Maria Theresa of Austria, who gave the first commander of the academy, Field Marshal Leopold Joseph von Daun (Count Daun), the order Mach er mir tüchtige Officier und rechtschaffene Männer daraus ("Make me hard working officers and honest men").

This idea was first put into practice by the 1966 class and goes back to the visit of a delegation from the Theresian Military Academy to the French Academy, the Military School Saint-Cyr, in 1964, where this tradition has existed for some time. With the recognition of the Bachelor Programme "Military Leadership" by the School of Applied Sciences Council on 29 July 1997, the training of military officers was also extended to four years. In 1999, therefore, no graduation took place.

Founded in 1751 by Maria Theresia as a "cadet school" with the intent of providing an excellent military education to the most able young men, the Theresan Military Academy remains a world leading institution to this day. The combination of a heart of tradition with modern education on a college level is mainly responsible for the internationally recognised high level of qualification of Austrian officers.
In the sphere of military administration the Court Council of War remained in place but other reforms were implemented.
