K Raghavendra Rao began his career in cinema as an assistant in the direction department of his father and noted filmmaker K Surya Prakash Rao. Rao eventually made his directorial debut in Telugu cinema with the film Babu (1975), but he gained immense recognition with his second film Jyothi (1976).
