Márta Mészáros (born 19 September 1931) is a Hungarian screenwriter and film director. The daughter of László Mészáros, a sculptor , Mészáros began her career working in documentary film , having made 25 documentary shorts over the span of ten years. [1]

Oct 7, 2021 · Born in Hungary, Márta Mészáros grew up in the Soviet Union where her father disappeared in the Stalinist purges shortly before her mother died. Márta was placed in a Soviet orphanage and only returned to her native Hungary after WWII.
Mészáros studied filmmaking in the Soviet Union and, once back in Hungary, started a career in documentary filmmaking. In 1960, she married acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker Miklós Jancsó. Her first feature film, The Girl, came out in 1968, and she made her best films in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
