  4. Oct 7, 2021 · Born in Hungary, Márta Mészáros grew up in the Soviet Union where her father disappeared in the Stalinist purges shortly before her mother died. Márta was placed in a Soviet orphanage and only returned to her native Hungary after WWII.

  5. Mészáros studied filmmaking in the Soviet Union and, once back in Hungary, started a career in documentary filmmaking. In 1960, she married acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker Miklós Jancsó.
