Sir George William John Benjamin, CBE (born 31 January 1960) is an English composer of contemporary classical music. He is also a conductor, pianist and teacher. He is well known for operas Into the Little Hill (2006), Written on Skin (2009–2012) and Lessons in Love and Violence (2015–2017)—all with librettos by Martin Crimp.
Born in 1960, George Benjamin began composing at the age of seven. In 1976 he entered the Paris Conservatoire to study with Messiaen, after which he worked with Alexander Goehr at King's College, Cambridge. When he was only 20 years old, Ringed by the Flat Horizon was played at the BBC Proms by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Mark Elder.

May 23, 2024 · Benjamin is a Commandeur dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres, an Honorary Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society and he was knighted in 2017. Awards include the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale (2019), the Grand Prix artistique 2022 de la Fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca at the Institut de France, the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Works Collection (2022) and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (2023).
