Piranha Bytes GmbH was a German video game developer based in Essen. It was best known for their Gothic and Risen series of role-playing video games. Piranha Bytes was founded in Bochum in 1997 and bought by Phenomedia in 1999. When Phenomedia filed for insolvency in May 2002, the Piranha Bytes management bought out the studio.

Gothic is an action role-playing game franchise created by German developer Piranha Bytes and since May 2019 owned by THQ Nordic . The latest installment in the main series, Gothic 3, was published in 2006 by JoWooD Entertainment. A spin-off, Arcania: Gothic 4, was developed by Spellbound Entertainment and published by JoWooD Entertainment in 2010.

Risen is an action role-playing game franchise developed by the German company Piranha Bytes. It is published and distributed by the German company Deep Silver, a division of Koch Media. The franchise is close to the three first episodes of the Gothic franchise, also developed by Piranha Bytes.
