Matthew Boulton FRS ( / ˈboʊltən / ⓘ BOHL-tən; 3 September 1728 – 17 August 1809) was an English businessman, inventor, mechanical engineer, and silversmith. He was a business partner of the Scottish engineer James Watt.
Matthew Boulton was an English manufacturer and engineer who financed and introduced James Watt’s steam engine. After managing his father’s hardware business, in 1762 Boulton built the Soho manufactory near Birmingham.

By entering into partnership with the Birmingham magnate Matthew Boulton in 1774, James Watt was able to channel the vast resource of Boulton’s Soho Foundry. Their partnership was so successful that the Boulton & Watt firm supplied engines and expertise to countries as far a field as Russia and Greece.
