Wayde van Niekerk ( South African English : / ˈweɪdfʌnniːˈkɛərk /, Afrikaans: [fan niˈkɛrk]; born 15 July 1992) is a South African track and field sprinter who competes in the 200 and 400 metres. In the 400 metres, he is the current world and Olympic record holder, having set the record in the Olympic finals.

The South African won the gold medal at Rio 2016 in the event and holds the world record after breaking Michael Johnson's time in winning the final in Brazil. Van Niekerk has only raced once in the 400m this season, a third-place finish at the New York City Grand Prix on 9 June, following a career-threatening knee injury.
