Viktor Borisovich Shklovsky (Russian: Ви́ктор Бори́сович Шкло́вский, IPA: [ˈʂklofskʲɪj]; 24 January [O.S. 12 January] 1893 – 6 December 1984) was a Russian and Soviet literary theorist, critic, writer, and pamphleteer.
According to Shklovsky, to use the device of estrangement means to delay perception of an object or incident, to call objects or incidents by other names, or to describe objects or incidents as if for the first time.
