   • Duke Ellington’s health gradually declined from lung cancer and his last appearance with his orchestra was in March 1974. A full issue of Downbeat was dedicated to his 75th birthday and was filled with praise from all of the top players in jazz. By then Ellington, who enjoyed reading the issue, was in the hospital. He passed away on May 24, 1974.
