Eric Carle (June 25, 1929 – May 23, 2021) was an American author, designer and illustrator of children's books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar , first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies.

Eric Carle (1929–2021) was one of the best known illustrators of our time. The creator of more than 70 picture books, he combined winsome stories and exuberant collages that appeal to young readers and adults alike.
Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, Eric Carle moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old; he was educated there, and graduated from the prestigious art school, the Akademie der bildenden Künste, in Stuttgart. But his dream was always to return to America, the land of his happiest childhood memories.
