Formerly, the provost of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Schmidt was MIT’s senior academic and budget officer, with overall responsibility for the Institute’s educational programs, as well as for the recruitment, promotion, and tenuring of faculty.

Nov 23, 2021 · MIT Provost Martin Schmidt has been named as the 19th president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the nation’s oldest technological research university. Schmidt, who earned his BS in electrical engineering at RPI in 1981, will assume its presidency on July 1, 2022.
Martin A. Schmidt received his B.S. degree from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1981 and his S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 and 1988, respectively. He joined the MIT faculty in 1988 in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.
