Francis Gerard Luis Fairlie (1 November 1899 – 31 March 1983) was an English writer and scriptwriter on whom 'Sapper' (H. C. McNeile) supposedly based the character of Bulldog Drummond. Ian Fleming stated that James Bond was influenced partially by the Drummond character.
Little is known of Gerard Fairlie who was a friend of Hector Cyril McNeile, ' Sapper '. and who took over the writing of the Bulldog Drummond novels after McNeile had died. He wrote seven Bulldog Drummond novels beginning with Bulldog Drummond on Dartmoor in 1938 and ending with The REturn of the Black Gang in 1954.
