The Iberian Peninsula (/ aɪ ˈ b ɪər i ə n /), also known as Iberia, is a peninsula in South-western Europe, defining the westernmost edge of Eurasia.
The Roman Republic conquered and occupied territories in the Iberian Peninsula that were previously under the control of native Celtic, Iberian, Celtiberian and Aquitanian tribes and the Carthaginian Empire.
Starting in the early 6th century AD, the kingdom's position as a Sassanian vassal state was changed into direct Persian rule. In 580, king Hormizd IV (578–590) abolished the monarchy after the death of King Bakur III, and Iberia became a Persian province ruled by a marzpan (governor).
Arab and Berber patrons and artists transformed Iberian visual culture yet again, in part through the introduction of art and architecture in the service of Islam, and in part through the celebration of a sophisticated and learned court culture. North of al-Andalus (as Muslim-ruled Iberia was known), a small, Christian-ruled territory remained.
