Michael Backes (born 7 January 1978) is a German professor of computer science. He is the founding director and CEO of the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security. He is known for his work on formal methods, cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies.
Director Michael Backes, as of today, is the youngest member of the Academy of Engineering Sciences "acaTech" and is regularly listed in rankings as one of Germany's most important IT personalities. As one of Germany's digital minds, he was honored by former Federal Minister Johanna Wanka.

Dr Michael Backes is Associate Professor, Head of the Namibian H.E.S.S. group, of Astrophysics Research in general, and of the Virtual Institute for Scientific Computing and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Namibia, as well as Extraordinary Associate Professor at North-West University (South Africa).
