He grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, the only child of Edith Kaufman, a homemaker, and Jack Small—a would-be theater actor who found work as the general manager for the Shubert Organization in the 1950s, booking shows, producing hits such as High Button Shoes, and becoming friends with luminaries like Jerome Robbins, Phil Silvers, and Jule Styne.
