Indiana St. Jackson Ward, previously known as Central Wards, is a historically African-American district in Richmond, Virginia, with a long tradition of African-American businesses. It is located less than a mile from the Virginia State Capitol , sitting to the west of Court End and north of Broad Street .
The Jackson Ward neighborhood is located on the northern edge of Richmond’s downtown district. Registered as a National Historic Landmark District, Jackson Ward was once the premier center of black commerce and entertainment.

Not only was Richmond the capitol of the state, it was also the capitol of the Confederacy. In response to the abolishment of slavery, many states put Jim Crow laws in place to keep Black people oppressed.
The historic district of Jackson Ward is located in the heart of Metro Richmond and boasts more cast iron work than any neighborhood outside of New Orleans. The National Register inventory lists more than 600 significant historic structures in the neighborhood.
Known for its African-American heritage, lively Jackson Ward is home to the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, the Victorian mansion home of the civil rights activist.
