May 25, 2024 · The city is situated at the junction of five short but deep rivers that flow into the Patos Lagoon. Founded in 1742–43 by colonists from the Azores, the city was first known as Porto dos Casais (or Porto dos Cazaes). In 1825 the first German immigrants settled near the site, to be joined later by Italian settlers.
