Schools in the Netherlands are closed on the following public holidays: Eerste kerstdag (Christmas Day); Tweede kerstdag (Boxing Day); Nieuwjaarsdag (New Year's Day); Eerste paasdag (Easter Monday); Koningsdag – 27 April (King’s Day); Bevrijdingsdag – 5 May (Liberation Day); Hemelvaartsdag (Ascension Day); Pinksteren (Whit Monday).
Each year at 20:00 on 4 May a two-minute silence is held in remembrance of the victims of the Second World War. In principle, shops must close by 19:00 on this day. Municipalities may give them permission to remain open, however. This also applies to a number of other days, including Good Friday and Christmas Eve.

Nov 17, 2023 · The Netherlands’ support for Ukraine is steadfast. For 2024 the government has set aside over €2 billion in aid. This sum is mainly intended for military support, but a portion of it will also go to criminal investigations and justice, recovery and reconstruction, and donations to funds. This was announced by Minister of Defence Kajsa Ollongren, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hanke Bruins Slot and Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Liejse Schreinemacher.

The Government of the Netherlands fixes the dates of the main school holidays and gives advisory dates for the spring and autumn holidays. For the benefit of pupils, holidays are spread throughout the school year.
