Ike & Tina Turner was an American musical duo consisting of husband and wife Ike Turner and Tina Turner. From 1960 to 1976, they performed live as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, supported by Ike Turner's band, the Kings of Rhythm, and backing vocalists, the Ikettes.
The Ike & Tina Turner Revue was formed in 1960 in St. Louis by songwriter, musician, and bandleader Ike Turner. By 1963, Ike Turner and his wife Tina Turner, lead singer of his band, had a string of R&B hit singles but no charting albums on Sue Records. They recorded on Turners own Sonja label and then signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1964. [4]
Fronted by Tina, with one of the rawest, most sensual and impossibly dynamic voices in Black music, the Ike And Tina Revue was an ensemble that dripped musical discipline while manifesting nearly unbearable tension, eventually giving way to wave upon wave of catharsis.
The group, now known as The Ike and Tina Turner Revue, were soon the stars of the soul circuit. By the time they reached The Ed Sullivan Show, they already had three Top 40 hits. On January 11 1970, the Turners took over the Sullivan stage.
Ike assembled the Kings of Rhythm, Jimmy Thomas, a trio of female singers known as the Ikettes, and Tina Turner to form the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. They transitioned from performing in bars to places like the Apollo Theater in Harlem as the track rose to the pop chart.
