The Senate of Serampore College was established in 1818, in the Danish settlement of Serampore, West Bengal, India, by three pioneer Christian missionaries and their associates – William Carey (1761-1834), Joshua Marshman (1768-1837), and William Ward (1769-1823).

As University Grants Commission Act of 1956 came into being, the Senate of Serampore College enquired from the Secretary of the University Grants Commission with regards to the continued recognition of Serampore College (University) entitling it to confer degrees in accordance with its present Charter and the Act.

The Senate of Serampore College, as noted, is the creation of the Serampore College Act 1918. Article Eleven of the Act, assigns to the Senate the duty to frame courses of studies and make rules for the conduct of examinations.

Course-Master of Theology. M.Th. Programme. The degree of Master of Theology (M.Th) is a post-graduate program offered by the Senate of Serampore College which was first introduced in the year 1948. The primary purpose of the M.Th. program is to train teachers for the various theological colleges in India.
