Joanne Lewis has been the Executive Director of the Northern Institute of Social Justice (NISJ), Yukon College, since the institute opened in January 2010. She was involved in developmental work leading to the institute’s opening and was seconded from the Department of Justice, Government of Yukon, to direct the institute.
The Northern Institute of Social Justice (NISJ) opened in January, 2010. The institute is funded by the Yukon Government and was created in response to the need for training and education courses for people delivering social justice-related programs and services.
Residential School Awareness is intended primarily for frontline workers in any field who want to build their awareness and understanding of Indian Residential School, with respect to Yukon. The session opens with a brief overview of residential school in the Yukon context.
Since January 2010 the NISJ has delivered 130 short training courses, to over 2,500 students, focusing on locally relevant and recognized training; the Institute is working towards accreditation for some of its programs.
First Nation governments are active partners with the NISJ in engaging First Nation people to develop the skills and capacity to effectively participate in social justice related fields, while also ensuring that NISJ courses are reflective of Indigenous cultures, values and traditional knowledge.
Students who are in the merit list of NSEJS Results get to compete in the Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO). The INJSO is tentatively scheduled in January, 2023. Aspirants will be required to appear in the second stage with the necessary documents as requested by the conducting body.
