  5. Jan 25, 2009 · Perhaps its just the apparent contradiction in saying day and night in the same phrase that makes it less idiomatic. Maybe we could say yesternight (not actually a word). Yesternight (the night of yesterday, last night) has been a word since 1334 (OED). It may not be used a great deal these days but it was used by several 19th century writers.

I've always though that this was because the night was almost as much today's as yesterday's, whereas the evening was clearly yesterday's.

But bear in mind that this is an imaginary fragment of a unknown writing, possibly written in the first person with all the emotional (i.e. illogical) implications that that brings.
