Nov 25, 2006 · a jigsaw puzzle is a picture cut into many small pieces. A jigsaw (une scie à découper) was the tool originally used to cut the pieces (when they were made out of wood). Now they are usually cardboard and cut by a big machine, but the name stays the same.

B is making an analogy between a soccer team and a jigsaw puzzle, referring to Jess (I presume) as the piece that had been missing. Strictly speaking, a jigsaw is the tool that's used to cut the puzzle, but B is using it to refer to the puzzle itself.
Apr 9, 2011 · Welsh - Northern. Oct 29, 2023. #5. To build up a picture, perhaps, but not to build a (jigsaw) puzzle in my opinion. (Google Search disagrees with me.) You can also solve a puzzle, although some people might think this applies to more general puzzles as opposed to jigsaws.
Jul 1, 2021 · In AmE the whole thing is called a "jigsaw puzzle". The individual pieces are not puzzles. They are pieces of the puzzle. I haven't heard the term "jigsaw pieces", though it make sense. I've just heard "pieces of the (jigsaw) puzzle". "All the puzzle pieces are scattered on the floor." "All the puzzles are scattered on the floor."

Aug 12, 2009 · To add a piece to the puzzle is to fit it into the pieces that make a picture. It is to reduce the unknown, to add to the known. Though, that said, I can understand that the opposite also makes sense: to throw another piece into the puzzle is to add something that makes it more complicated, one more thing that you have to fit in.
