It is the capital of the province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo region .

It is located down the Pescara River, and like many Italian cities sits atop a hill. As in many parts of this country you are not far from any postcard scene.
Chieti is the capital of the Province of Chieti. The town lies on a crest along the Pescara River a few kilometers away from the Adriatic Sea, with the Maiella and Gran Sasso mountains in the background. It has a fine Romanesque cathedral (11th century), a 14th-century tower, and a university.
Chieti sits on top of a hill with the older, historical centre, Chieti Alto at the top of the hill and the newer city and university, Chieti Scalo, at the bottom of the hill and in the valley of the river Aterno-Pescala. It has incredible views over the mountains of Majella and Gran Sasso.
