Dhananjoy Chatterjee was hanged on 14th August 2004 for the murder of Hetal Parekh (18) on 5th March 1990. His conviction by a lower court on the basis of circumstantial evidence, along with the death sentence, had been upheld by the Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta and the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India.

According to the prosecution case, the appellant Dhananjoy was one of the security guards deputed to guard the building 'Anand Apartment' by M/s Security and Investigating Bureau of which Mr Shyam Karmakar PW 21 was the proprietor.
The appellant, Dhananjoy Chatterjee was found guilty of offences punishable under Sections 376, 302 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code by judgment dated 12.8.1991 of the IInd Addl. Sessions Judge, Alipore, who sentenced him to death for the main offence punishable under Section 302 IPC.
