This simple phrase "We the People of the United States" boldly asserts that the United States is a sovereign nation with its power arising from the people. What began as a proposed union of colonial dependencies of a British monarch in 1754 had been forged by revolution, war, and the struggles of peace into a single independent nation whose power is derived from the people of that nation.
