Sir Brian Harold May CBE (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician, songwriter, record producer, animal rights activist and astrophysicist. He achieved worldwide fame as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the rock band Queen, which he co-founded with singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor. His guitar work and songwriting contributions helped Queen become one of the most successful acts in music history.

While honing his natural talents as a musician, in 1965 May landed a place on the undergraduate astrophysics course at Imperial College London — currently one of the top 10 universities in the world — where he earned a bachelor's degree. He then started working on a PhD in astrophysics, also finding time to join several bands, one of which eventually became the original lineup of Queen: May and Mercury with John Deacon on bass and Roger Taylor on drums.
