Winner of the Palme d'Or prize at Cannes that year, it ran to a full four hours, and so its theatrical life was limited.

Jacques Rivette’s “La Belle Noiseuse” is a wounding four-hour meditation on the creative process. It uses tactility to break through the ritualism that is the laborious act of bringing art into the world; one brush stroke, one slash to the soul at a time.
A famous but long inactive painter, Frenhofer has sequestered himself in a country chateau with his wife Liz, a taxidermist nursing her secret hurt. But when he meets Marianne, the sullen girlfriend of a young acolyte, Frenhofer finds his creative impulse suddenly renewed.
