It is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier which entered into service with the Indian Navy in 2013. It has been renamed in honour of Vikramaditya, a legendary emperor of Ujjain, India. The carrier served with the Soviet Navy and later with the Russian Navy (as Admiral Gorshkov) before being decommissioned in 1996.
INS Vikramaditya is the newest and largest ship to join Indian Navy on 16 Nov 2013. The ship was commissioned on 16 Nov 13 by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in Russia.
