Charminar, a monument and mosque, is an imposing model that celebrates the influence of the Muslim Turkomans in India.
Charminar was built by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty when he shifted his capital from Golconda to Hyderabad. According to the historians, the inadequacy of water and the plague forced Quli Qutub Shahi to move his capital. He pledged to build a monument if the suffering of his people came to an end.

The Char Minar ("Four Minarets") was built in 1591/999 AH by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah (r. 1580-1611/987-1019 AH) and is considered Hyderabad's primary monument. It is a square structure standing at the intersection of two streets leading to the four quarters of the original city, with an archway on each of its sides.
The Charminar stands at the heart of Hyderabad's main bazaar area (also known as Charminar), a labyrinth of lanes crowded with shops, stalls, markets and shoppers. You can climb to the 1st floor for a view of the district. The 2nd floor, home to Hyderabad’s oldest mosque, and the upper columns, are not open to the public.
The name "Charminar" translates to "Four Minarets" in Urdu, referring to the four elegant minarets adorning the monument. Charminar's distinctive architecture blends Indo-Islamic styles, each four facing each of the cardinal directions. Adjacent to Charminar is the historic Mecca Masjid, one of the oldest and largest mosques in India.
Charminar is one of the seven wonders of Hyderabad and is one of the most famous tourist attractions and is visited by international as well as national tourists. It is a glorious representation of the history of Hyderabad and stands erect till date, narrating the story of the illustrious past of this historical city, once the seat of the Nizam.
