Robin was born in Guilin, Guangxi Province with the original name Kwan Wai-pang. He was already cast in Rediffusion’s radio drama since he was in primary school. As a music enthusiast since he was young, Robin formed the popular rock band Teddy Robin and the Playboys. He then worked for Rediffusion Television (RTV) and Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) as a music programme host and also worked behind the scenes. He made his acting debut in Shaw Brothers’ The Price of Love in 1970.
