Jan 5, 2017 · One of the founders of today’s Universal Studios, Carl Laemmle, was born to Jewish parents in Lupenheim, near Stuttgart, Germany, on January 17, 1867. Young Carl immigrated to Chicago in 1884 and became a naturalized citizen five years later. His Declaration of Intention is among the holdings of the National Archives in Chicago.
By 1929 Carl Laemmle, Jr., was in charge of all film production at a major Hollywood studio. His only line experience had been as a writer of a popular series of two-reel comedies, The Collegians , for Universal in the mid-1920s. Since his father owned and operated the company, Carl, Jr., in 1927, at age 19, was suddenly supervising feature films.

The son of Universal Studios founder Carl Laemmle, he supervised the production of short subjects as a teen and was appointed President of the company on his 21st birthday. He initiated a program to upgrade the quality of the studio's films and one of his first projects, "All Quiet On the Western Front" (1930), won an Academy Award for Best Picture.
Carl Laemmle died in 1939 of a heart attack in Los Angeles at age 72. As with most Hollywood studios, production boomed during WW2, and by 1945 the studio was averaging a release of one feature film per week.
