The Old Ways is a solid debut from newly minted horror director Christopher Alender, whose previous claim to fame was a few Muppets shows. He delivers a compelling possession story with some decent body horror, all wrapped in Mexican-Aztec folklore.

Marcos grew up in Puerto Rico and he was raised super Catholic, but occasionally his mother would blow his mind with a story about Pre-Catholic traditions and rituals.

So, while Christopher Alender’s The Old Ways isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel here, it’s extremely well-made and features some standout set pieces, which is enough to set it apart from a crowded field of generic mediocrities.
