The main laboratories of the ICGEB are located in Trieste, Italy, New Delhi, India and Cape Town, South Africa, with a network of over 40 Affiliated Centres world-wide and Regional Research Centres being established in China, Panama and Sri Lanka.

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) was established as a project of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in 1983.
The RRC contributes to strengthen research skills, knowledge and capacities of the local scientific community while pursuing specific objectives for research, training and technology transfer to industry, to benefit both the hosting country and the region.
The ICGEB Trieste Component provides a scientific and educational environment of the highest standard and is fully equipped to undertake modern molecular and cellular biology research. Currently, 18 Research Groups operate out of ICGEB Trieste.
