Raja Ali Haji adalah tokoh ulama dan sastrawan Melayu terkemuka abad ke-19. Ayahnya bernama Raja Ahmad (l. 1773). Kakeknya, Raja Haji (w. 1784), adalah seorang pahlawan Bugis yang pernah menjadi yamtuan muda (raja muda) ke-4 Kesultanan Johor-Riau (1777–1784).
