2 days ago · The food subsidy bill for the fiscal is likely to exceed the interim budget estimate of ₹ 2.02 lakh crore by about ₹ 18,000 crore because of huge stocks of rice at the godowns of FCI. Sources said the surge in subsidy stems from the high cost of carrying and storing a massive 50 million tonnes (mt) of rice — three-and-a-half times the buffer stock requirement.
