  7. Esther Mary Vergeer was born on July 18, 1981, in Woerden, Netherlands. In 1990 she had surgery on her spine to remove excess blood vessels that were affecting her health. The surgery left her paralyzed from the waist down. As she adapted to her injury, Vergeer learned how to play basketball and tennis in a wheelchair.
