In 1997, at the age of 25, Garou was cast in the starring role of Quasimodo in Notre-Dame de Paris, a musical adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The production proved a box office smash, vaulting Garou to fame. With the help of Celine Dion's manager/husband, René Angélil, he signed a recording contract and issued his solo debut, Seul, in late 2000.
