The Tamarind Seed is a 1974 romantic thriller spy drama film written and directed by Blake Edwards and starring Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif. Based on the 1971 novel of the same name by Evelyn Anthony, the film is about a British Home Office functionary and a Soviet era attaché who are lovers involved in Cold War intrigue.
During a Caribbean vacation, a British civil servant finds herself falling in love with a Russian Agent. While on vacation in Barbados to recover from the lingering effects of a love affair that ended badly, Judith Farrow (Dame Julie Andrews) meets Feodor Sverdlov (Omar Sharif), a handsome Russian.

"The Tamarind Seed" is a seventies spy thriller, but not a spy thriller in the action-adventure James Bond mould. This one has more in common with the Cold War dramas of John Le Carré, although a more exact comparison would be with a Le Carré novel crossed with the cheesy romantic fiction of the Mills and Boon School.
