Bapu made his debut in Hind cinema, directing Hum Paanch in 1980, starring Mithun Chakravarthy, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Shabana Azmi and Amrish Puri. It was followed by Bezubaan (1981) with Shashi Kapoor, Woh Saat Din (1983) starring Anil Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapuri, and Mohabbat (1985).
