Born Jean Merilyn Simmons she was raised in the London suburb of Cricklewood by her father, former Olympic gymnast Charles Simmons, and his wife, Winifred. During World War II, the family was evacuated to the village of Winscombe in Somerset, where her father taught physical education and Simmons received her first taste of performing by joining her sister in singing for local audiences.
