Born in St. John’s NL on August 28, 1940, he was the only son of the late Augustine James Casey and Margaret (McNamara) Casey.

Casey’s lifelong friend Bob Hupp said he and Casey went from kindergarten to college to the music business together. "We did a lot of music together," Hupp said. "We did the Dick Clark American Bandstand together.
