Jun 16, 2024 · Usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) is not a disease, it is a histopathologic and radiologic pattern of interstitial lung disease. This can be caused by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis or non-specific interstitial pneumonia. The diagnosis is typically decided by a multidisciplinary team.
Usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) is a distinct histological lesion observed in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) but can be found in other etiologies. The diagnosis of UIP can be established by surgical lung biopsy or by high-resolution thin-section computed tomographic (CT) scans (provided the radiographic features are classical).
Dec 12, 2005 · IPF/UIP and NSIP closely mimic each other clinically but NSIP has a far better outcome. However, it remains unclear if NSIP is a truly separate and distinct entity. The histopathological pattern of NSIP can be found in a wide variety of clinical and radiological contexts. This review addresses these and other uncertainties regarding NSIP and UIP.
Nov 23, 2021 · UIP was the most common pathologic finding in patients undergoing evaluation for post-COVID-19 ILD. Our preliminary data suggests that CT changes described as interstitial thickening, peripheral reticulations, and/or bronchiectasis may be helpful in identifying patients with underlying fibrotic chronic interstitial pneumonia for which UIP is the chief concern.
