Thomas Cole (1 February 1801 – 11 February 1848) was an English-born American artist and the founder of the Hudson River School art movement. [1] [2] Cole is widely regarded as the first significant American landscape painter. He was known for his romantic landscape and history paintings.

Before emigrating with his family to the United States in 1818, he served as an engraver's assistant and as an apprentice to a designer of calico prints.

Thomas Cole (1801-1848) perceived landscapes in the United States as places of natural beauty to be treasured rather than exploited. He advocated for the preservation of the landscape through his art and writing, and is credited with launching a unique movement in American landscape art that is known today as the Hudson River School.
Biography. As a young artist [Thomas] Cole roamed the Hudson River valley and the region around the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, making sketches of the shrubs, trees, rocks, and waterfalls that he later incorporated into his own imaginative compositions to depict the look and feel of America's wilderness.
