Chandra Shekhar represented the constituency eight times between 1977 and 2007. Following his death in 2007, Neeraj won the subsequent bypoll as an SP candidate and retained the seat in the 2009 polls.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Neeraj Shekhar of SP won this seat defeating Sangram Singh Yadav of BSP by a margin of 72,555 votes which was 10.7% of the total votes polled for the seat.
