We were children really: he was 17, I was 20. We discovered that we lived in the same neighbourhood and we were both at Juilliard, and we became close friends.

About. Itzhak Perlman was born in Tel Aviv on 31st August 1945 to a family of Polish origin. He was drawn to the violin from the age of three, but when he was four he contracted polio, losing the use of his legs. Despite his handicap, he began learning the violin a year later, and his first teacher was a café violinist.

He made an album made with jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, and klezmer. Perlman has been a soloist for a number of movie scores, including the score of the 1993 film Schindler's List by John Williams . Perlman plays on a special Stradivarius violin called the Soil Stradivarius, made in 1714. He also plays on a Guarneri del Gesu made about 1743.
