  1. Mary and Max is one of the few films that actually makes me feel crummy. It was simply frustrating watching these hopelessly depressed characters doomed to suffer their problems forever because they lack the willpower to solve their issues. Max was somewhat sympathetic because he has aspergers and is able to accept himself for who he is.

  5. Mary and Max is a well-crafted film for adults; it deals with depression, suicide, drugs, sex, and death. The plot is basic but the film is anything but. Mary lives in Australia and Max lives in New York. Both have lonely, depressing lives, until one day they become pen pals and their lives change for better/worse.

  6. The movie includes several deaths, most of which are treated humorously (Mary's father is swept away while fishing; her mother confuses a bottle of sherry with a bottle of toxic formaldehyde; Max's A/C falls out the window and kills a mime, and his pet fish keep dying in extravagant ways), but a couple of the deaths are disturbing.
